I like sabbatical Mondays. The beautiful child goes back to daycare. The house gets cleaned. Laundry gets done (well, mostly). Chores are completed. Exercise happens.
First, a weekend update for the curious: We took our new-to-us (1984?) beach catamaran out on the river. It took us 45 minutes to set up and 30 minutes to tear down and we only spent 40 minutes out on the water but it was a good 40 minutes.
E set the expectations properly, comparing it to our canoe outings. There was only a little bit of breeze, but even so we were traveling faster than if both of us had been paddling full steam. At halfway I jumped off for a swim. C wasn’t 100% sure what to think but he liked “helping” with the lines.

p.s. E recently watched a comedy sketch called “35 Pictures” that has really gotten him to up his family picture taking game this week… in case any other moms need some humor to help get themselves into the end-of-year album.
Today…
wrote my pages
went for an hour walk
wrote a friend a letter
job boards for an hour or two
picked up a hold at the library (I also received a package of used books, including Wendell Berry’s Hannah Coulter and Jayber Crow yay)
went for an after-lunch walk
laundry
looking for lodging for a trip in two weeks that I super forgot to book a month ago
spiked my blood sugar twice
The first blood sugar spike was because I had the nerve to have a peanut butter cookie after lunch, which was a turkey sandwich on sourdough sandwich bread. I took off on a mile walk directly after, which slowed the curve but did not stop it.
The second was from having spaghetti for dinner. So. Cool.
They count as spikes with the target blood glucose range I selected. The app suggests that non-diabetics pick a target range of 70-160 mg/dL, but the reading I’ve done suggests that an upper range of 140 is better over the long haul. So far I’ve only taken it over 160 once — this weekend, when I had some crackers, fruit, and a sugary cocktail after dehydrating in the sun. But I’ve now taken it over 140 several times — having two pieces of toast with breakfast, having a waffle for dinner, and now today.
What I’ve learned today is that brisk walking can only do so much to stop a spike (but I wonder what if I had kept walking?). I’m interested to see what a VO2 max workout would do.
One change I’ve made already is that when I feel snacky, I have a cup of tea or decaf coffee. We’ll see how this goes.
Edit: As I was writing this, my sensor crapped out. It lost Bluetooth connection with my phone and my phone wouldn’t pick it back up. I got four and a half days? Out of a $40 device that is supposed to last 15 days? I have one more sensor and I’m sure I could contact the device support, but I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet.
Today I felt…
Productive, but surprised that I didn’t get any project work done. On my walk this morning I was convinced that I would be able to get some Friendship Databasing done, but after the chores and the job hunting, the day was gone.
Tomorrow rather than job hunting I am going to compile what I have applied to so far. I’ve had a look at the family budget and decided what my minimum salary is, and in looking at so many job listings I’ve decided what I’m (generally) comfortable applying for — I’m applying to any executive-ish administrative positions that don’t involve organizing large events or “coordinating complex travel” for bigwigs.
Somebody please talk me into or out of applying for these positions. I’m sure I could warm up to it and do a great job, but I can also already feel the way I could sit and spin circles inside my head worrying whether I booked a hotel in the wrong city or whether I forgot a crucial detail at an event.
Tomorrow…
Might look a lot like today, except I would like to work on the Friendship Database. Thinking about my scrolling habits last week got me wishing I had a functioning Friendship DB to try out with my friends I mainly see on IG.
