dwelling in serendipity
and the anthropocene era, apparently
Welcome to Dunham Dwells! Here we talk about books and writing and connection and lately, yarn. I’m so glad you’re here.
Books
This week I received John Green’s newest book The Anthropocene Reviewed as a gift. It was a surprise to receive it and while I knew that John was writing a new book I didn’t know what it is about or even that it is not a novel like his previous works. The Anthropocene Reviewed is an essay collection adapted from his podcast where he rates ideas and things from the human era on a 5-star scale - everything from Canada geese (2 stars) to the temporal range of humanity (a hopeful 4 stars). It’s fascinating and beautiful and so very John - nerdy and nervous while also hopeful and romantic. I’ve only read a few chapters but can’t wait to get to the rest. I give the intro and first three chapters four stars.
Connection
It’s wild that so much of my Kickstarter funding has come from total strangers - people who found my project by searching through Kickstarter for ideas and rewards they like. I hadn’t realized this was a possibility, honestly, and thought you had to be some sort of algorithm wizard to get this much funding from strangers, but seeing as how more than half of my funding (57% at the moment) has come this way, I am very grateful. Maybe people just like yarn. You hear stories about the Internet coming together to make cool things and communities forming online but this is the first time I’ve felt it so tangibly. I have 39 backers right now and this feels like a small and huge number at the same time. As that number has grown, I’ve been picturing us all in a room together, maybe my still non-existent dye studio or tiny storefront, and every person who gives is another person cheering me on. It feels really good and I’m so glad I said yes to this crazy little idea.
Art & Life
Speaking of yarn, etc, a couple days ago I took the plunge and ordered my acid dye and just a little yarn to see if I liked a certain supplier. I figured these would take the longest to come and its a small enough batch that I could stick my nose out for it before the Kickstarter campaign is over. Those orders come on Thursday, and if I order my other supplies over the weekend I figure I’ll be getting my hands dirty in about a week! Eep! Keep an eye out here and especially on my Instagram if you want to have a front row seat at beginning that process!
Until next week,
Love,
Amy
